University of Tennessee brass faculty members Alex van Duuren, trombone and Katie Johnson-Webb, horn, present a recital along with collaborative pianist Devin Lyon. The program will include trombone works by Dutilleux, Strauss and Serocki; horn works by Bozza and Vignery; and Delibes' "Flower Duet" from Lakme, arranged for horn and trombone by Adam Frey.

Alex van Duuren currently serves as assistant professor of trombone at the University of Tennessee, where he is responsible for private and class instruction of undergraduate and graduate trombone students, as well as performing with the UT Faculty Brass Quintet. He is a member of the Quintasonic Brass Quintet with colleagues Vince DiMartino, Jason Dovel, Matthew Haislip and Alexander Lapins. Dr. van Duuren completed his doctorate at the University of Arizona, two master's degrees at the University of Michigan, and an undergraduate degree at the University of Florida. His primary instructors, respectively, were Moisés Paiewonsky, David Jackson and Dr. Art Jennings. Additionally, at the Eller College of Management he also completed a doctoral minor in entrepreneurship, which he received while participating in the nationally renowned McGuire Entrepreneurship Program. Dr. van Duuren has performed with a variety of professional ensembles including the Knoxville Symphony, Greenville Symphony, Tucson Symphony, Symphony Augusta, and the Orquesta Filarmónica de Sonora. He was also a member of the Ohio Light Opera and the Disneyland All-American College Band. Dr. van Duuren still performs on his original instrument, serving as a piano accompanist for professional recording sessions as well as for his students and guest artists.

Katie Johnson-Webb is the associate professor of horn at the University of Tennessee. A flexible, thoughtful and active performer of solo repertoire, chamber music and orchestral literature, Dr. Johnson-Webb was selected to perform with the Aspen Summer Music Festival, the Kent/Blossom Music Festival and the National Repertory Orchestra; she has performed several times at International Horn Symposium, and has presented recitals and master classes at universities across the US. She collaborated with pianist Kirstin Ihde to record her first solo CD, La Loba, to be released this year. Dr. Johnson-Webb is a member of the Tennessee Brass Quintet and a founding member of the Cobalt Horn Quartet, winners of the International Horn Society Horn Quartet Competition–Professional Division (2018). She presented a lecture on incorporating ear training in private teaching at Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic (Chicago), and presented similar lectures at Southeast Horn Workshops and the Northeast Horn Workshop. Dr. Johnson-Webb completed her undergraduate studies in music and political science at Valparaiso (IN) University. She earned her DMA at the University of Wisconsin–Madison under the direction of Professor Emeritus Douglas Hill and Professor Daniel Grabois. While completing her MM degree at Wisconsin, she worked closely with Professor Douglas Hill as a Bolz Fellow. In 2018 she was awarded a grant from the American Scandinavian Foundation to collaborate with Norwegian hornist and pedagogue, Frøydis Ree Wekre in Oslo, Norway.
