Course Description

This course examines the historical and present-day sonic lived environment of Central Ohio while analyzing discourse around the value we place on sounds. Why do some sounds seem desirable while others are considered noise? What do conflicts about public sounds tell us about perceptions of different subcultures in Central Ohio? What musical traditions are present, and who decides their worth? Students will make recordings of various locations around their city and learn to use sound production software to make sound art and tell a story with their recordings.
