Practice Audition Day
Wednesday, October 8, 2025
9 a.m. – 4 p.m. • Timashev Family Music Building
Program Overview
Each October, the School of Music invites high school juniors and seniors to take part in a special “Practice Audition Day.” Students considering music as a major in college are encouraged to take this opportunity to meet Ohio State faculty and students, observe classes, tour the new Timashev Family Music Building and have a practice audition evaluated by faculty. Other topics include:
- The Ohio State and School of Music admissions process
- Financial aid and scholarships
- Tips on auditioning and performing in public
- Ensembles, including The Ohio State University Marching Band
- The Music Education program at Ohio State
This is a free event, but registration is required. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend with their student. For inquiries email Tanya Sparks.
Registration is closed.
DEADLINE: Wednesday, Oct. 1
Practice Auditions
Students should prepare 5–10 minutes of music for their practice audition. Refer to Audition Requirements.
Vocalists will be provided an accompanist and should bring their piano scores. Instrumentalists should be prepared to perform without an accompanist.
Trombone Students:
Due to a scheduling conflict, trombone professor Elisabeth (Shafer) Suffern will be unable to meet with classical trombone students or hear trombone practice auditions at the October 8 Practice Audition Day event. As an alternative, all trombone students are encouraged to attend a separate Trombone Visit Day on Monday, October 13 so that your visit can include meetings with the professor. Please email Tanya Sparks to learn more.

What others are saying about this event:
I loved my meeting with KBJ! She gave me so much amazing advice about how I can improve my sound and I can't wait to see how much it helps! I love her teaching style and how much care she has for every flute player, and I can't wait to audition! I hope I get in so I can continue to learn from her!— High School Senior
My time with Professor Powell was very helpful! I enjoyed her trying to get to know me and being curious about what I do outside of music. I also appreciated the tips and tricks she gave me.— High School Senior
This is an outstanding event. I attended twice with my daughter a few years ago, and I wanted to make sure to give my son and his friend the same opportunity.— Parent
