In Plain Sight

World premiere

Ila V. Sharma, composer-in-residence

Malik Khalfani, conductor

The composer writes:

I composed In Plain Sight in autumn 2023. My goal in writing this piece was to juxtapose harmonic dissonance and consonance, which portrays many of the conflicting feelings I was having at the time. The piece begins with a dissonant theme in the brass, conveying tension and anguish. This then resolves to a tonal, consonant theme that eases the tension. Later, the dissonant and consonant themes are played at the same time, combining feelings of tension and ease. An important inspiration for this piece was an art installation by American artist, Lawrence Weiner entitled “AS TO BE IN PLAIN SIGHT.”  The title of my orchestra piece, borrowing from Weiner, was inspired by the idea of putting my art out into the world. In Plain Sight marks my orchestral debut — I wanted to represent feelings of tension, release and openness.

“Kommt ein schlanker Burch gegangen”
from Der Freischütz

Carl Maria von Weber (1786–1826)

Text: Johann Friedrich Kind (1768–1843)

Samantha Sayar, soprano

Text and Translation

Kommt ein schlanker Bursch gegangen,
blond von Locken oder braun,
hell von Aug' und rot von Wangen,
ei, nach dem kann man wohl schau'n.
Zwar schlägt man das Aug' aufs Mieder
nach verschämter Mädchen Art;
doch verstohlen hebt man's wieder,
wenn's das Bürschchen nicht gewahrt.
Sollten ja sich Blicke finden,
nun, was hat das auch für Not?
Man wird drum nicht gleich erblinden,
wird man auch ein wenig rot.
Blickchen hin und Blick herüber,
bis der Mund sich auch was traut!
Er seufzt: Schönste! Sie spricht: Lieber!
Bald heißt's Bräutigam und braut.
Immer näher, liebe Leutchen!
Wollt ihr mich im Kranze sehn?
Gelt, das ist ein nettes Bräutchen,
und der Bursch nicht minder schön.

If a slim young man comes by,
with blond or brown hair,
bright eyes and red cheeks,
oh, he is certainly easy to look at!
Of course, we must lower our eyes,
in the way of modest maidens;
but we secretly raise them again
when the boy is not aware
Should we meet each other's glances,
what is the harm in that?
One doesn't become blind,
but one might blush a little.
A little glance here and a glance over there,
until the mouth dares to say something!
He sighs: "Beautiful one!" She says: "Dearest!"
Soon they are bridegroom and bride.
Therefore, my friends, get a little closer!
Want to be seen in a wedding garland?
Truly, that is a nice little bride,
and the man is no less handsome.
