Choir Auditions — Autumn 2024

Join us!

Ohio State choirs are open to ALL students, regardless of their major. Placement is by audition for Chorale, Men's Glee Club, Women's Glee Club, and University Chorus.

The Gospel Choir is part of Commercial Music Ensembles


Audition Procedure — 3 Steps

Auditions will be held the week of August 19, but vary for each choir. Check the schedules and sign-up instructions carefully.

Step 1

This Choir Audition Registration Form must be completed by ALL students prior to their audition.

Once you complete and submit the Audition Registration Form, you will receive a confirmation email with a link to SignUpGenius. Select the correct link for the choir(s) you wish to join, and schedule your audition time.

Review and prepare the audition materials below. 


Chorale

Auditions: Tuesday, Aug. 20–Friday, Aug. 23

Be prepared to perform:

  • Scales and short melodies to test range and demonstrate voice quality
  • An unaccompanied melody — Carmen Ohio
  • Melodic retention exercise — sing back 5-note melodic patterns
  • Rhythmic exercise — clap or sing rhythmic patterns in common meters
  • Sight reading, both rhythms and pitches

Women's Glee Club

Auditions: Monday, Aug. 19–Friday, Aug. 23

Be prepared to perform:

  • Vocal exercises to demonstrate range and vocal timbre 
  • Melodic retention and pitch recall to demonstrate musicality 
  • Sight reading, both rhythms and pitches
  • You may be asked to sing an unaccompanied solo of your choice (1 minute), a cappella

SPECIAL NOTE: All members of WGC 2024–2025 must commit to both Autumn and Spring semesters, as well as through May 2025 to accommodate our performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City on May 21–25, 2025

Men's Glee Club

Auditions: Tuesday, Aug. 20–Friday, Aug. 23

Be prepared to perform:

  • Scales and short melodies to test range and demonstrate voice quality
  • An unaccompanied melody — Carmen Ohio
  • Melodic retention exercise — sing back 3, 4, 5-note melodic patterns
  • Rhythmic exercise — clap or sing rhythmic patterns in common meters
  • Sight reading, both rhythms and pitches

University Chorus

Auditions: Tuesday, Aug. 20–Friday, Aug. 23

Be prepared to perform:

  • Scales and short melodies to test range and demonstrate voice quality
  • An unaccompanied melody — a patriotic tune or hymn tune (words provided)
  • Melodic retention exercise — sing back short melodic patterns
  • Rhythmic exercise — clap or sing rhythmic patterns in common meters
  • Sight reading, both rhythms and pitches
