Auditions for Autumn 2022
Our Choirs
Each of our choirs is open to ALL students, regardless of their major. Placement is by audition for Chorale, Women's Glee Club, Men's Glee Club and University Chorus.
- There is NO audition requirement to participate in Gospel and Spiritual Choir.

Step 1
Auditions will be held the week of August 23, but vary for each choir. Check the schedules and sign-up instructions carefully.
This Choir Audition Form must be completed by ALL auditioning students prior to their audition.
Instructions and audition sign-ups for each choir are posted below.
Chorale
AUDITION DAY
August 23 (Weigel 315)
- Returning singers are not required to audition.
- New singers for Autumn 2022 are required to audition.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Be prepared to perform:
- A prepared solo — a pianist will be provided. The song should be classical in style and should demonstrate the qualities that you most want to highlight in your audition (range, legato, expressiveness etc.). Either English or foreign language is acceptable. Please bring a copy of the song for the pianist. You may use music, as well.
- A tonal memory test — Dr. Bode will play five pitches on the piano and ask you to sing them back to him.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Be prepared to perform:
- Vocal exercises (provided)
- Pitch matching and recall (provided)
- Sight-reading
- A solo of your choice (1 minute), a cappella

WHAT TO EXPECT
Be prepared to perform:
- Scales and short melodies — to test range and demonstrate voice quality
- An unaccompanied melody — a patriotic tune or hymn tune (words provided)
- Melodic retention exercise — sing back short melodic patterns
- Rhythmic exercise — clap or sing rhythmic patterns in common meters
- Sight reading — both rhythms and pitches

Gospel and Spiritual Choir

Gospel Choir is a non-auditioned group for students of all majors who enjoy or are curious about singing gospel music. Singers develop skills within the framework of a strong aural tradition and explore techniques of improvisation as well. The group rehearses a wide variety of gospel literature and performs for the Columbus community at least once per semester.
