PRELUDE AND RONDO (1966)
David Holsinger (b. 1945)
Dr. David Holsinger is an American composer writing primarily for concert band. Born in Hardin, MO in 1945, his collegiate education was completed at Central Methodist University, the University of Central Missouri, and the University of Kansas. His pieces are particularly known for his work with various time signatures. Holsinger also has a long history of being a well-respected conductor. He often is a guest conductor at multiple institutions for honor bands and district bands, and currently serves as the conductor of the Lee University Wind Ensemble at Lee University, Cleveland, TN. Prelude and Rondo was Holsinger’s first published piece, finished in 1966. The prelude explores the different tone combination possibilities of the wind ensemble, primarily featuring conversation between the brass and woodwind sections. The rondo introduces an ostinato in the trumpet section that returns frequently, but always leads to new musical material.
SURE ON THIS SHINING NIGHT (1938/2004)Samuel Barber (1910–1981)
arr. Richard Saucedo
Samuel Barber was a prolific and versatile composer who wrote in multiple genres such as opera, ballet, orchestral, chamber music, organ, choral and much more. Hailing from West Chester, PA, Barber began composing at age 7 and had written his first opera at age 10. Barber was the recipient of numerous prizes such as the American Prix de Rome, two Pulitzers, and an election to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Sure on This Shining Night was originally written for mixed chorus and piano in 1938 and is considered one of Barber’s most famous contributions to the genre. The text for the piece was based on James Agee’s first collection of poems, Permit Me Voyage, published in 1934.
Sure on this shining night
Of starmade shadows round,
Kindness must watch for me
This side the ground.
The late year lies down the north.
All is healed, all is health.
High summer holds the earth.
Hearts all whole.
Sure on this shining night
I weep for wonder wandering for alone
Of shadows on the stars.
SHADOW RITUALS (2006)
Michael Markowski (b. 1986)
Michael Markowski is a self-taught composer with a degree in Film Practices from Arizona State University. Although his degree was not in music, Markowski participated in a number of programs such as the Art of Orchestration with Steven Scott Smalley (2008), the National Band Association’s Young Composer and Conductor Mentorship Project (2008), and the NYU/ASCAP Foundation’s Film Scoring Workshop (2014). Shadow Rituals was one of Markowski’s first compositions for concert band. The work was awarded first prize in Manhattan Beach Music’s Frank Ticheli Composition Contest in 2006. Markowski remarks that Frank Ticheli’s works were a great inspiration for him through not only Shadow Rituals (which he dedicated to Ticheli), but his other compositions and growth as a musician.
OF SAILORS AND WHALES (1990)
W. Francis McBeth (1933–2012)
I. Ishmael — II. Queequeg — III. Father Mapple — IV. Ahab — V. The White Whale
William Francis McBeth was an American composer with influences such as Clifton Williams, Bernard Rogers and Howard Hanson. Although McBeth was widely known for his wind band works, he also had a conducting career that took him to 48 states as well as multiple countries. He was principal conductor of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra in Little Rock, AR for many years. Of Sailors and Whales is based on Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. The work was commissioned by and dedicated to the California Band Directors Association and was premiered in 1990 by the California All-State Band. Each of the five movements portrays a character from the book — Ishmael, Queequeg, Father Mapple, Ahab and the whale itself. McBeth uses short passages from the novel prior to each movement to introduce the character sketches. These quotations were expanded by the United States Coast Guard Band into the narration you will hear this evening.
CIRCUS DAYS (1944)
Karl L. King (1891–1971)
arr. Loras Schissel
Karl L. King, born February 21, 1891 in Paintersville, OH, was a bandmaster and march music composer. When he was eleven he began study of the cornet with Emile Reinkendorff, the director of the Grand Army Band of Canton, OH. King received no formal instruction in music but learned from local musicians when he played brass instruments in the Canton Marine Band. His first professional positions were in the Thayer Military Band in Canton, the Neddermeyer Band in Columbus, OH and the Soldier’s Home Band in Danville, IL. At age 19, King began a career of playing in and directing circus bands. Circus Days, written in 1944, was one of King’s best-known pieces out of 300 published works. Karl King is still known for his circus music.
