in transit for string orchestra (2021)

Cooper Wood (b. 1999)

in transit (2021) is an energetic essay for string orchestra. Driven forward by a constantly transforming ostinato, this piece explores the consequences of momentum and motion. A sound-world of diverse elements surrounds the indefatigable rhythmic motive, with each of these gestures vanishing in and out of existence like poignant phantoms. Solo instruments occasionally break through the texture, offering a differing point of view before rejoining the swirling masses of sound. Eventually, the music wears itself down — a reminder that the concept of perpetuum mobile is never capable of being realized — disintegrating gently into the silence from which all sound ultimately arises.

This work is dedicated to Miriam Burns.
