Flute Workshop 2026 Digital Handbook
Welcome from the Flute Workshop Director
Dear Students and Parents:
Greetings! We welcome you to The Ohio State University campus for five days of music-making. Bring an open mind, plenty of questions and lots of energy. Chamber music is at the heart of this program. Flutists will coach your ensembles, teach classes and lessons, and serve as staff. You join the ranks of hundreds of flutists who have taken part in this program for over forty years at Ohio State. I look forward to getting to know you personally. Enjoy, make wonderful music, and if you have suggestions or questions, feel free to ask.
With thanks,
Katherine Borst Jones, Flute Workshop director
Professor and Woodwinds Coordinator

Students will be assessed a $15 fee if a swipe card is not returned at time of checkout.
What to Expect at Flute Workshop
MORNING — We will begin each day with a morning warm-up, together, where we will explore flute fundamentals while playing exercises designed to improve your tone, articulation, breathing, finger technique and rhythm. To prepare, review the chromatic scale and major scales and arpeggios.
The rest of the morning is divided into three class periods:
- Theory class, where you will learn the fundamentals of music theory. Bring your flutes.
- Flute master class with Professor Jones — prepare orchestral excerpts or pieces to perform in this setting. Be prepared with specific questions.
- Small flute ensemble where you will learn rehearsal techniques while preparing music for the concert on Thursday, as well as having the opportunity to work on the techniques from the morning warm-up in a small setting. These rehearsals will be coached by a Flute Workshop staff member.
AFTERNOON — After lunch we rehearse as a large flute choir to prepare for the finale concert. You will also have the opportunity to select from a variety of activities, including a Eurhythmics class, chamber ensemble/duet rehearsals, sight-reading classes, trying the alto or bass flutes, or open practice time.
All students will receive a private lesson (as assigned on Sunday), and those selected to perform on the Solo Night Concert will have a chance to rehearse with the program’s accompanist.
EVENING — After dinner everyone will meet in their small ensembles for additional rehearsals, followed by an evening concert or activity.
What can you do to prepare?
- Practice any solo pieces or etudes that you would like to learn.
- If you can, prepare a new piece, different from the one you may have performed at contest or auditions this year — perhaps you have audition music for All-State or a youth orchestra.
- Bring duet music to practice with colleagues.
- Review your scales (chromatic, major, minor and arpeggio).
- Bring a notebook so you can keep track of any new information.
We look forward to working with you on your flute skills as well as music that you have prepared!
