Wind Symphony — Chamber Winds: "Rodrigo and Strauss"

Wind Symphony concert event page
October 23, 2024
7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Weigel Auditorium

The program features two historically important works for wind ensemble by two contrasting composers — Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo and the German, Richard Strauss. The concert opens with graduate student Uiliami Fihaki conducting Rodrigo’s famous Adagio for Wind Orchestra, a work that is by turns sensual and energetic, evocative and exciting. Even Miles Davis recorded an arrangement of this theme on his album Sketches of Spain.

Richard Strauss, perhaps best known for his orchestral tone poems Ein Heldenleben and Till Eulenspiegel, composed the Sonatine No. 1 in F major for 16 winds in the summer of 1943 while recuperating from illness. He gave it the humorous subtitle From of an Invalid's Workshop. The work demonstrates the composer’s most mature musical language (only six years prior to his death), in a three-movement symphonic form. Due to its difficulty, the work is rarely heard in live performance.

Additionally programmed is Guillermo Lago's "Addis Ababa" from Ciudades, featuring student saxophonists Lucinda Dunne, soprano; Cooper Greenlees, alto; Sean Bauman, tenor, and Colin Fogerty, baritone.

Russel C. Mikkelson, conductor; Uiliami Fihaki, guest conductor.

This concert is free and open to the public. No ticket required.

Livestream broadcast begins at 7:30 p.m.
