Hear all of Ohio State's big bands in one concert! Mike Smith (Jazz Ensemble), Chris Anderson (Jazz Lab Big Band) and Kristopher Keith (Jazz Workshop), conductors.
The Jazz Workshop Big Band will perform the music of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, "Peer Gynt," as arranged by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn (1960). This five-movement Suite by Ellington and Strayhorn features many of Grieg's famous melodies from the incidental music to Ibsen's dramatic poem (1867). Guest artist Sam Langer joins the Jazz Workshop Big Band as the featured clarinet soloist for this special presentation. Jazz Lab Big Band plays selections by Frank Foster, Hank Mobley and Pharez Whited, as well as Chris Anderson's "Movin' Up." The Jazz Ensemble spotlights compositions and arrangements by Quincy Jones and his contemporaries, as well as a special performance of Philip Baturin's "Gray Love" for our friend and fellow bandmate.
This concert is free and open to the public. No ticket required.
Livestream broadcast begins at 7:30 p.m.
