2023-10-04 19:30:00 2023-10-04 21:00:00 Wind Symphony features Elisabeth Shafer, trombone The Wind Symphony opens its 2023–2024 season on Wednesday, Oct. 4 in Weigel Auditorium. Conductor Russel C. Mikkelson will lead the ensemble in a wonderfully varied program featuring visiting assistant professor of trombone, Elisabeth Shafer, on Bert Appermont’s Colors.  Also included are three recent works, all written by female composers — Bright Shadow Fanfare, Nicole Piunno; Coming Home, Jillian Whitaker; and a consortium premiere of Ohio State alumna Erika Svanoe’s newest piece, Symphony in Blue and Gold. Additionally, the concert includes Percy Grainger’s heartfelt and sentimental Colonial Song.  Sarah Baker and Shawn Davern will share the podium as DMA student conductors. This concert is free and open to the public. No ticket required. Livestream broadcast begins at 7:30 p.m. Access the digital program before, during or after the event. No paper programs will be distributed. All events are subject to change. GETTING HERE Park in the Ohio Union South Garage (open to visitors 24/7), walk North along College Rd. to enter the South doors of the Timashev Music Building. Weigel Auditorium is located on the second floor at the far south end of the building. An open stairway located just inside the south doors leads to the hall. If an elevator is needed, walk through the Music Commons, behind the open stairway to the back hallway. Follow the hallway through the double doors to the elevator.
