O Schöne Nacht, Op. 92, No. 1
Johannes Brahms (1833–1897)

O schöne Nacht!
Am Himmel märchenhaft
Erglänzt der Mond in seiner ganzen Pracht;
Um ihn der kleinen Sterne liebliche
Genossenschaft.

Es schimmert hell der Tau
Am grünen Halm; mit Macht
Im Fliederbusche schlägt die Nachtigall;
Der Knabe schleicht zu seiner Liebsten sacht
O schöne Nacht!

— Georg Friedrich Daumer (1800–1875)

O lovely night!
In the heavens like a fairytale
The moon shines in all its splendor;
Around him, the little stars’ lovely
Companionship.

The dew shimmers brightly
On the green grass; with power
The Nightingale sings in the lilac bush;
The young man sneaks gently to his lover —
O lovely night!

Whisperer - painting by Gabriella Stauffer

"Fire, Women and Sea: the Mighty Three" — Aesop

Our program emphasizes strength of Womxn in the face of formidable forces. Our symbols, fire and water, are elemental influencers, and are highlighted in our singing as agents of adaptation, endurance and creation.

Like the power of these collective natural forces, our community evidences the change-making of collaboration and support by eschewing antiquated gendered roles while upholding artistically rich and technically sound musical standards. — Jordan Saul, conductor

"Whisperer" — painting by Gabriella Stauffer

O Antiqui Sancti
from Ordo Virtutum
Hildegard von Bingen (1098–1179)
arr. Michael Engelhardt

Kayen Huvler, Adelaide Kawakami, Zoe Leasure, vocal trio
Matt Paetsch, electric bass
Matt Hanson, percussion

O Antiqui sancti,
quid admiramini in nobis?
Verbum dei clarescit in forma hominis,
et ideo fulgemus com illo,
edificantes membra sui
pulchra corporis.

O ancient holy ones,
why do you marvel at us?
The Word of God gleams brightly within
the human form,
and therefore we shine with him,
enhancing the parts of his beautiful body.

They May Tell You
Andrea Ramsey (b. 19—)
Text by Isabella Cook

and they may tell you, mountain woman
that you were never meant to rise this high
but you of the snowy eyes and purple skies
were born to climb
forget the rocky footing
You have nowhere to go but up

and they may tell you, river woman
that your mouth would be prettier shut
but you of the swift words and clear currents
were born to speak
forget the icy starts
from your source springs only truth

and they may tell you, meadow woman
that you are not worth the air you breathe
but you of the green roots and pure blooms
were born to grow
forget the empty hearts
everything you touch opens up

but ocean woman,
sometimes your waves will break
the tides can’t come in strong every day
and even the moon makes mistakes
so when your waters falter
they may ask you
who do you think you are?

and you can tell them
I am a woman
I keep the company of others like me
Women of forest
Women of fire
Women of sunshine
Women of sea
and we lay claim to everything
from coral reef to redwood tree

and even still they may tell you
don’t get ahead of yourself
ignore them
go as far as you can

Er ist gekommen
Clara Schumann (1819–1896)
arr. Brandon Williams

Casey Cook, piano

Er ist gekommen in Sturm und Regen
Ihm schlug beklommen mein Herz entgegen.

He came in storm and rain,
my anxious heart beat against his.
How could I have known that his path
Should unite itself with mine?

He came in storm and rain,
He boldly stole my heart.
Did he steal mine? Did I steal his?
Both came together.

He came in storm and rain,
Now has come the blessing of spring,
My love travels abroad, I watch with cheer,
For he remains mine, on any road.

Chante Waste Hoksila (My Kind-hearted Boy)
Traditional Lakota Lullaby
arr. Linthicum-Blackhorse

Ahí yé, hé yo iyé.
We hé yo iyé.
Ahi yé, hé yo iyéya.
We yeló iyé.

Čhanté wašté hokšila
Lá khé ištinma
Hanhépi kin wašté
We yeló iyé

I have brought you here, so that I can speak to you in your language
I am speaking to you in your language
I have brought you here so that you will recognize me
I am speaking your language

My kind-hearted boy,
I beg you to fall asleep
The Night is good
I am speaking your language

At the sea, the blue sea
There was a floating flock of small white swans
And where did the grey-white eagle come from?
It dispersed the flock around the blue sea
White down rose to heaven
Grey feather fell on a green meadow
And who will collect these feathers?
A beautiful girl.
