About the Artists


A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, CHRIS VAN HOF is the assistant professor of trombone at Ball State University and an active freelance trombonist in a variety of styles. He also is the trombonist and arranger in the Emerald Brass Quintet and the assistant manager of the International Trombone Festival. He is an official Performing Artist for S. E. Shires Custom Brass Instruments.
     Van Hof's work at Ball State includes teaching undergraduate and graduate students in applied trombone lessons, conducting the Cardinal Trombone Choir, coaching chamber music, and currently serving as chair of the Ball State Faculty Council. He has taught at BSU since 2017, having previously taught at Colorado State University, University of Wisconsin−Platteville and Nazareth College. He has been a guest presenter, teacher and performer for events including the 2018, 2019 and 2021 International Trombone Festivals, the 2018 American Trombone Workshop, the 2017 and 2021 Panamanian Trombone Workshop, El Sistema’s 2nd Trombone Festival in 2020 (Venezuela), Rekkenze Brass Week in 2019 (Bavaria, Germany), and Urubrass in 2020 (Uruguay). He teaches in both English and Spanish.
     As a freelance performer, Chris Van Hof is fluent in a variety of musical vernaculars. Recent engagements have included the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, The Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, Los Adolescentes Orquesta (salsa), Kanola Band (traditional New Orleans), and various one-off engagements throughout Indiana and Michigan. As a soloist, Van Hof has recently performed as a concerto soloist with the Eastman Wind Ensemble and the Ball State University Symphony Orchestra, as well as presenting solo recitals throughout the Midwest. His trombone duo (with bass trombonist Evan Conroy), Make More Noise, has commissioned ten new works for tenor and bass trombone duo since 2018, and recently performed a full recital of their material at the 2021 International Trombone Festival (Columbus, GA).
     Van Hof studied at Western Michigan University with Steve Wolfinbarger for his bachelor's degree, at the Eastman School of Music with Mark Kellogg for his master's, and at the University of Wisconsin−Madison with Mark Hetzler for his doctorate. He lives in Indianapolis with his wife Andrea and their two boys, Dexter and Fritz.
 

A native of the Pacific Northwest, pianist MICHAEL SEREGOW enjoys a multifaceted career as a performer, teacher and recording artist. Winner of The American Prize in chamber music performance, a national competition in the performing arts, he performs collaboratively with internationally recognized artists throughout the world. Recent highlights include performances at the 18th Encuentro Universitario Internacional de Saxofón México in Mexico City; the 2nd International Conference on Women’s Work in Music in Wales, UK; and Honduras Sax Festival IV in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. As a collaborative pianist, Seregow has also performed at numerous national conferences within the United States including those for the North American Saxophone Alliance (Tempe, AZ), College Music Society (Louisville, KY) and the National Flute Association (Salt Lake City, UT). In September 2020, Seregow released his second CD recording project entitled Palouse Songbook, on Centaur Records. This disc, recorded with flutist Sophia Tegart, features new and recent compositions by women composers for flute and piano, including two new commissions. Currently a member of the piano faculty at Ball State University, Seregow has also served on the keyboard faculties at Washington State University, University of Puget Sound, and University of Oregon. A sought-after pedagogue, he has been invited to lecture and adjudicate across the United States, and his students have been prizewinners in state and national competitions. Seregow earned graduate degrees from University of Oregon (MM and DMA in piano performance); in summer 2011 he was invited to be a collaborative piano fellow at Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, CA. His principal teachers include Mark Westcott and Dean Kramer.
