As a distinguished member of the faculty and a doctoral graduate teaching associate within the Department of Music at The Ohio State University–Lima, Austin Thomas holds a pivotal role in leading the Capstone Project — Drumming for Wellness course, as well as imparting his expertise through various music education and general education courses. His contributions extend beyond the classroom through his service and participation on several esteemed music education committees, as well as his involvement in the Youth Summer Music Programs at Ohio State–Columbus.
Thomas earned his degrees in music education from The Ohio State University–Columbus, and Florida State University–Tallahassee, and has been mentored by some of the most influential figures in music education, including Dr. Cliff Madsen.
In his previous teaching appointments in public schools, Thomas spearheaded the development of an innovative, multi-tiered curriculum in music technology and sound engineering, which has since set a new standard for contemporary music education in Central Florida. His current research is dedicated to advancing modern music programs at the secondary level, drawing on his experience as a high school band director and music technology educator. His collaborative scholarly work has been featured in the Journal of Research in Music Education, and he has been nominated to present at several prestigious professional conferences.
Austin Thomas' accolades include the 2021 Award for Excellent Teaching, the 2022 Virginia A. Bridges Music Education Teaching Award, and the 2023 Joseph A. Leeder Memorial Fund. Additionally, he has secured over $100K in grants to support his music programs throughout his career in Florida and Ohio.
