The School of Music welcomes artist faculty members of the Cleveland Institute of Music, violinist Ivan Zenatý and pianist Sandra Shapiro, who also tour as a duo in the United States, Europe and Asia. Zenatý’s credentials include numerous competitions since the late 1980s as well as numerous orchestra appearances, especially in his native Czech Republic, and collaborations with such musical artists as Yo-Yo Ma and Yehudi Menuhin. Shapiro attended Juilliard, won numerous piano competitions, toured around the world, and performed with a multitude of major orchestras, including the Cleveland Orchestra, New York Philharmonic and Chicago Symphony. The combined credentials of Zenatý and Shapiro speak to their impeccable musicianship and quality; critics describe their performances as "[being] in perfect synch," "riveting tandem work," and "compelling"..."Their rousing, pulsating finish...voicing the open-mouthed astonishment everyone in the audience felt."
One of the works to be featured during the master class is the Paganini-Liszt Etude La Campanella (Wooju Lee, pianist), in celebration of Franz Liszt's birthday.
Audience will be seated onstage for the master class; the stage door (Room 100) is located across from the first floor elevator in Weigel Hall.
Zenatý and Shapiro will also present a recital at 6 p.m. in Weigel Auditorium. Selections by Schumann, Martinů and Dvořák.
Both events are free and open to the public.
