Jazz Lab Big Band presents a concert of music in homage to Duke Ellington, composed by some of the greatest musicians, composers and arrangers from the world of jazz and popular music. The selections cover a wide spectrum, including tunes written in the Duke’s lifetime by his friend Dave Brubeck and by Charles Mingus, who had a working relationship with Ellington off and on for years. The concert also includes “Sir Duke,” Stevie Wonder’s #1 hit single from 1976, as well as “Gladly,” which is the first movement of the Joyful Noise Suite, composed by Don Sebesky to commemorate Ellington’s centennial celebration in 1999. Please join us as the Lab Band, with special guest Robert Brooks, celebrates The Duke! Michael Smith, director.
A pre-concert lecture entitled "Duke Ellington: American J a z z Composer," will begin at 7:45 p.m.
