Born and raised in Columbus, Kevin Turner began playing guitar at age 9. He was trained as a jazz guitarist but spent an equal amount of time playing in the pop genre. At 16, Kevin was introduced to the professional scene by jazz great Hank Marr when he joined Hank’s jazz organ trio. Hank was Kevin’s music teacher at the performing arts high school where he attended. Quickly becoming known in his hometown for his consummate skills on both guitar and bass, Turner soon found success nationally when he served as sideman for pop and jazz legend Ray Charles in 1984. His soulful guitar solo on Charles’ “Winter Wonderland” can still be heard each holiday season throughout the world. Turner has performed, recorded or toured alongside such artists as Charles Earland, Jimmy Smith, George Howard, Diane Schuur, Destiny’s Child, The Winans, Oleta Adams, Lalah Hathaway, and Kirk Whalum.

Turner holds an undergraduate degree in Jazz Studies from Ohio State and a master’s degree in Music Education from the University of Illinois. Turner has served as a faculty member in the Jazz Studies department at The Ohio State University as well as in the jazz department at the University of Illinois. Turner instructed orchestral string students for 16 years - two years at Fort Hayes Metropolitan High School for the Performing Arts in Columbus, and 14 years leading award-winning orchestras from grades 4-12 in the Champaign, IL school district.
