Daniel Schene has long been known as a consummate artist and a superlative teacher. Having performed throughout the United States and internationally, concertgoers have come to admire his comprehensive musicianship and formidable technique. Schene studied at the North Carolina School of the Arts, at Indiana University and at The Eastman School of Music. As a recitalist and concerto soloist, Schene has been acclaimed for his “exquisite pianism and musicianship” (St. Louis Post Dispatch), having performed at Salle Cortot, Theatro da Paz, and numerous universities, among other venues. A passionate chamber musician, Schene has collaborated with such renowned artists as Zara Nelsova, Dénes Kovács, and St. Louis Symphony concertmasters Jacques Israelievitch and David Halen. He was the duo partner of violinist Éva Székely of the Esterhazy Quartet for four decades. He has also appeared with the Arianna String Quartet, and was for many years the pianist of the Trio Americas and the Webster Trio. Devoted to contemporary music, Schene has played works of Joan Tower, Libby Larsen, James Willey, Andrew List, Roberto Escobar and David Werfelmann, and has premiered and recorded numerous compositions.
Schene is Emeritus Professor of Music at Webster University, where he was director of Piano Studies from 1983–2020. He is a founding faculty member of the Indiana University Piano Academy and of the Institute of Advanced Vocal Studies in Paris. He has given guest master classes in the U.S. and abroad. Schene records for CRI and New World Records.
