Overture for Winds (1959)
Charles Carter (1926–1999)

During his residency at Florida State University, Charles Carter composed Overture for Winds in the year 1959. This piece provides great challenges to both the performer and the audience members. The performers must execute tempo, dynamic and articulation changes without “giving away” abrupt shifts to the audience. For the audience, the piece can seem like a roller coaster ride of changes, shifting between fast and slow, yet seamlessly regaining strength and driving toward a brilliant close. This work is underplayed in wind band/ensemble programs, which is quite a shame given the strength and focus required to accomplish such a feat. Mr. Carter created a masterpiece of academic and entertainment value.

Waves (2007)
Brian Balmages  (b. 1975)

Alex Mondragon, guest conductor

Waves was commissioned in honor of the retirement of Roger Wolfe, Director of Bands, Rockdale County High School, Conyers, Georgia. The commission effort was spearheaded by his son and daughter, Brian and Stephanie, along with his wife Holly. It was made possible by the Rockdale County High School Band Boosters, family and friends. Waves is a symbolic, lyrical work that not only conjures images of the tranquility of the sea, but serves as a metaphor for the retirement of great teachers. Even though some of the most magnificent waves eventually roll onto shore, there will always be other waves that follow and continue the great miracle of nature. The legacy of great teachers will never be forgotten.

Note by the composer

Rocketship! (2017)
Kevin Day (b. 1996)

Rocketship! is an intense and vibrant concert opener which features a rhythmic energy highlighted by a marching snare drum. It’s quick tempo and frequent dynamic shifts provide the perfect backdrop for the “lift-off” of a wind ensemble’s performance.

Ode for Trumpet (1956)
Alfred Reed (b. 1944)

Alexander Sanso, soloist

This composition was first performed by Don Jacoby, with the Texas All-State Band conducted by Clarence Sawhill, on February 10, 1956 at the Texas Music Educators Association convention in Dallas, Texas. The composition is developed in free variation form from an eight measure theme. After a short introduction this theme appears for the first time. There are three variations with a short interlude after the first variation. The theme reappears in its original form before the interlude returns to form the coda. The melodies in the solo trumpet and orchestra are interwoven like a dialogue, broad and singing. The tempo is always relaxed and never hurried.

Songs of Old Kentucky (2007)
Brant Karrick (b. 1960)

I.  John Riley (with Wayfaring Stranger)
II. Barn Dance

Five folk tunes are employed in Karrick's Songs of Old Kentucky. All come from transcriptions made by Josephine McGill and Loraine Wyman, who traveled the Cumberland Mountains during the early 20th century, collecting a total of more than 200 songs. These songs reflect the heritage of the mountain settlers, reaching back to their Scottish and English roots of generations past.

The work was premiered in 2006 by the Kentucky Music Educators Association District — IX All District Band, the group for which it was commissioned. John Riley (with Wayfaring Stranger) is the first movement of the work. The music emerges from a beautiful if somewhat lonely alto saxophone soliloquy. Soon joined in counterpoint by the clarinet, the lines unfold to engage the entire ensemble in a colorful tapestry of thematic statements until the movement is called to conclusion through the return of the melancholy call of the alto saxophone.
