George Curran became the bass trombonist of the New York Philharmonic in June 2013 after serving in that role with the orchestra during the previous season. Prior to that, he was a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and a fellow with the New World Symphony. He has also performed with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Detroit and Cincinnati Symphonies, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Gerard Schwarz's All-Star Orchestra, and many other renowned ensembles.

Mr. Curran has participated in several recording projects recently, beginning with an Atlanta Trombone Project recording titled Roadwork. This project resulted in the formation of the Southeast Trombone Symposium, an annual week-long summer workshop at Columbus State University (CSU), and which has become one of the most important trombone workshops in the United States. Following Roadwork, he was a soloist on a disc titled A Beautiful Noise, which featured prominent trombone soloists performing with the CSU Trombone Choir. In 2017, Curran released a full-length solo CD called Vital Signs, which contains works by Gillingham, Gershwin, Bourgeois, Pierce, and Verhelst. Another CD, Legacy, was released concurrently by members of the Southeast Trombone Symposium; Curran is featured prominently throughout this recording.

As a soloist, George Curran has premiered several new works written for him, most importantly the title track of his solo CD. Written by David Gillingham and called Vital Signs of Planet Earth, Curran premiered it with the Central Michigan University Wind Ensemble and has performed the piece several times since, including at Carnegie Hall. He has performed two recitals at the International Trombone Festival, and has been a featured soloist and clinician at several other trombone workshops including Slide Factory, the Arctic Trombone Festival, and the Association of Spanish Trombonists. Twice he was a soloist and judge at the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival in South Korea. Curran has also performed concertos with bands at the American Trombone Workshop and the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, and with many collegiate ensembles.

A native of Farmington Hills, Michigan, George Curran received his bachelor’s degree in music education on euphonium from Central Michigan University and a master’s degree in performance on bass trombone from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. His principal teachers have included John Rojak and Peter Norton. He is an S. E. Shires Trombone artist and plays on his own line of mouthpieces by Ultimate Brass. He is on the faculty of Rutgers University, Manhattan School of Music, and Mannes School of Music.

Mary Jo Cox, pianist

Mary Jo Cox received her Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in piano performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. A student of Frank Weinstock and C. Nolan Huizenga, she also studied harpsichord with Eiji Hashimoto. Dr. Cox maintains an active schedule as soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States. As a member of the Ixopo Duo, she and pianist Franklin Larey were awarded first prize in the Graves Duo-Piano Competition and were finalists in the prestigious Murray Dranoff International Duo-Piano Competition. She currently holds the position of principal keyboardist with the Midland Symphony Orchestra and is a frequent collaborative pianist for festivals and competitions throughout the United States. In addition, Cox is a frequent MTNA adjudicator and has served on the faculties of Central Michigan University and New England Music Camp. She is the director of Worship and Arts at First Presbyterian Church, Mt. Pleasant, and co-directs the Classics @ The Presby recital series.
