The School of Music welcomes guest trombonist Lucas Borges with collaborative pianist Teodora Tonea Owen, Ohio University. They will perform Concerto for Trombone, Georg Christoph Wagenseil; Fantasia para Trombone e Piano, Abdon Lyra; Choral, Cadence et Fugato, Henri Dutilleux; T-Rex for Trombone and Tape, Mark Phillips and Thoughts of Love, Arthur Pryor.
 
Lucas Borges is an assistant professor of trombone at Ohio University (OU) and holds a doctoral degree from the University of North Texas (UNT), master’s degree from Indiana University and bachelor’s degree from Universidade de Brasilia (Brazil). Before his appointment at OU, Dr. Borges served as a teaching fellow at UNT for four years and maintained a private studio in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. He was also previously a faculty member at Escola de Música de Brasilia. Additionally, he has been invited to teach and perform in international festivals such as II Festival Internacional de Múica Erudita de Piracicaba (2011), 35o Curso Internacional de Verão da Escola de Música de Brasília (2013), and XXV Festival Internacional de Música Colonial Brasileira e Música Antigua (2014) in Juiz de Fora, Brazil.

Dr. Borges was a member of the Bloomington Camerata Orchestra, Orchestra Filarmônica de Brasília, and guest musician with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra (Indiana), West Virginia Symphony, Ohio Valley Symphony, and Orquestra Sinfônica do Teatro Nacional (Brazil) among others orchestras in the USA and Brazil. An active chamber musician, Dr. Borges was a founding member of many chamber groups including Trombones SA, Fine Brass, and Impact Brass Quintet. He was also a member of the Bell Street Four and North Texas Trombone Consortium. Currently, Dr. Borges is a member of OhioBrass (OU Faculty Brass Quintet), Ohio Trombone Quartet and 3Basso Low Brass Trio. His playing can be heard in many commercial recordings through labels such as GIA, Biscoito Classico, Trama and Tratore Music. Dr. Borges recently performed the première recording of Dana Wilson’s Concerto for Trombone released in December 2016.

Lucas Borges has performed at many national and international conventions such as the International Trombone Festival (2007, 2016), Texas Music Educator Association Convention (2013), Ohio Music Education Convention (2016), Big Twelve Trombone Conference (2014, 2015), International Trumpet Guild Conference (2015), Trombone SA International Seminar (2011), and TCU Trombone Summit (2016). He has toured with a variety of chamber groups, orchestras and popular ensembles throughout South, Central and North Americas as well as having performed under many renowned conductors including Kurt Masur, Luis Biava, Eugene Corporon and Giancarlo Guerrero. He has performed solo recitals and given master classes in music schools nationally and abroad, including Marshall University, University of Central Arkansas, Missouri State University and Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes (México). Dr. Lucas Borges is a Conn-Selmer Performing Artist.

Borges has been fortunate to receive instruction from many world-class brass players; however, his primary mentors are Paulo Roberto da Silva, Dr. Carlos Eduardo Mello, Wagner Polistchuck, Peter Ellefson, Vern Kagarice and Tony Baker. In his spare time, Lucas enjoys spending time with his family, relatives and friends.

Teodora Tonea Owen, originally from Romania, attended the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, United Kingdom, for her undergraduate studies prior to attending the Piano and Pedagogy graduate program at Ohio University’s School of Music as a graduate assistant under the direction of Dr. Christopher Fisher. At the Royal Conservatoire, Tonea Owen studied piano performance under concert pianist Jonathan Plowright, as well as participating in master classes with renowned performers such as Pascal Roge, Joseph Seiger, Fali Pavri and Graeme McNaught.

Tonea Owen was also the recipient of the Erasmus Exchange Scholarship, which allowed her to study under Adriano Ambrossini at the Conservatorio Dall’Abbaco in Verona, Italy. Highlighted performances include recitals in the United States, Italy, Sweden, Romania and across the United Kingdom. She has appeared as a soloist with the State Philharmonic in Oradea, Romania, the Ohio University Symphony Orchestra as well as in annual collaborations with the Geneva International Choir and Orchestra. Tonea Owen has a successful private studio, and is an up-and-coming collaborative pianist and improviser.
