The Artist Entrepreneur - Alexis Wilson, author, dancer, producer and director and Byron Stripling, musician, conductor, actor, singer and artistic director
This artistic duo will talk about what it takes to sustain successful careers as creatives, maintain a family, and continue the creative process. This panel is presented in collaboration with The Department of Dance and the School of Music.
Alexis Wilson was born in Europe to a prima ballerina and celebrated Broadway choreographer and raised in New York City where she was a professional dancer. She has produced and directed numerous theatrical productions, as well as fund raising events – all with great success. Ms. Wilson has written and published poetry, a full length musical, made contributions to a variety of published works, and self-published her recent memoir, "Not So Black and White.” She is currently working on a book of non-fiction about her self-publishing process, a one-woman show for New York, and a screenplay. Ms. Wilson earned her BFA in drama from the prestigious Carnegie-Mellon University. She has lived her life ‘out of the box’ and because of this she is passionate about nurturing others and their differences, insisting that these elements are everyone’s greatest strengths.
With a contagious smile and captivating charm, trumpet virtuoso Byron Stripling has ignited audiences internationally. As soloist with the Boston Pops Orchestra, Stripling has performed frequently under the baton of Keith Lockhart, as well as being featured soloist on the PBS television special, "Evening at Pops," with conductors John Williams and Mr. Lockhart. Currently, Stripling serves as artistic director and conductor of the highly acclaimed Columbus Jazz Orchestra. Since his Carnegie Hall debut with Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops, Stripling has become a pops orchestra and jazz festival favorite throughout the United States and Canada. He earned his stripes as lead trumpeter and soloist with the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Thad Jones and Frank Foster. Byron Stripling was educated at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York and the Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen, Michigan.
