Music Theory

Faculty list

Music theory at Ohio State provides students with skills and knowledge for all careers in music. Our innovative curriculum fosters strong musicianship through creative exercises in improvisation and composition, as well as analysis of various repertoires including Western classical, pop and jazz. Courses in aural training develop core skills in performance, audiation, transcription, listening, aural analysis, and improvisation. Courses in music theory emphasize notational fluency, music technology, analysis, and composition. Students reflect on their learning process and musical development, preparing themselves for lifelong learning in music.

Undergraduate students with a particular interest in theory are encouraged to pursue the Bachelor of Arts in Music degree and enroll in additional music theory electives such as the analysis of popular music; video game music; 18th, 19th and 20th century music; and extended tonality.

All undergraduate students seeking to enroll in 2000-level theory coursework should take the Theory Skills Assessment.
