About the Artist

Uta Weyand was born into a musical family in Reutlingen, Germany. The daughter of a Kapellmeister and an organist, she grew up with the choral, orchestral and organ repertoire. Her musical talent became apparent during her childhood, when she played the piano and violin, composed music and received vocal training.

The Post and Courier (South Carolina), predicted her musical career, writing that “Weyand demonstrates genius at the piano (…) she is a pianist of genius who should have a long career.” Germany’s Nürnberger Nachrichten noted that “…especially admirable is her ability to make the grand piano sing and draw a broad spectrum of enchanting colours from the instrument.”

Following the completion of her studies in Freiburg, Baltimore and Madrid with Elza Kolodin, Vitaly Margulis, Leon Fleisher and Joaquín Soriano, Uta Weyand embarked on a highly successful career with appearances at international venues such as Teatro Municipao (Rio de Janeiro), Teatro Sauto (Cuba), Meistersingerhalle Nürnberg, Musikhalle Hamburg, Palau de la Música (Barcelona and Valencia), Palacio de la Ópera A Coruña, the Teatro Real and Auditorio Nacional Madrid, and the Sottile Theatre (Charleston, South Carolina) among others.

She has performed with symphony orchestras in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia, the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, the Stuttgart Philharmonic, the Bamberg Symphony, the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie and the Jena Philharmonic under the direction of Jesús López Cobos, José Ramón Encinar, Gabriel Chmura, Jac van Steen, Manuel Galduf, Gabriel Feltz, Enrique García Asensio, Daniel Raiskin, Marc Tardue and Yves Abel.

Following multiple scholarships by the German Academic Exchange Service, Weyand has won first prize and special prizes for the contemporary Spanish music and for the best interpretation of Spanish music at the José Iturbi International Piano Competition in Valencia. Since then, her repertoire includes music from the Baroque to contemporary music.

Over the course of her ten years in Spain, Uta Weyand has received recognition for her passionate interpretation of the Spanish piano repertoire, including unknown or neglected works by Montsalvatge, Guridi, Ohana and Dupont. She worked closely with composers such as Michael Braunfels and Xavier Montsalvatge.

Her recordings for Hänssler Classics, Profil Medien and ARS Produktion received rave reviews worldwide. Weyand combines her active concert life with a teaching career, including master classes in Germany, Spain, Austria, Poland, Great Britain, Brazil, Cuba, China, Japan, Singapore and Australia. In 2000 Weyand joined the faculty of the Conservatorio Superior de Música in Castellón. From 2002 until 2011 she was a faculty member at the Royal Conservatory in Madrid. She is a regular jury member at piano competitions including Gina Bachauer (Salt Lake City), Franz Liszt (Weimar), José Iturbi (Valencia), Grieg (Norway), Hamamatsu (Japan), the Van Cliburn (USA) and The Sydney (Australia).

Uta Weyand is the founder of the PIANALE International Academy & Competition and organizer of the PIANALE Piano Festival concert series for young pianists.
