Jonathan Mitchell is a second-year graduate student pursuing Master of Music degrees in both flute performance and in music composition. He currently serves as the graduate teaching associate for the flute studio, under the direction of Katherine Borst Jones. In 2024, Mitchell graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Music Education from The Ohio State University. During his undergraduate career, he earned the Presser Scholar award as well as several other accolades in music education and performance. As a member of The Ohio State Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, Perfect Fourth Flute Quartet, and the Ohio State Undergraduate Woodwind Quintet, Mitchell was and is an avid performer. He was selected as runner-up for the 2022 Ohio State Concerto Competition, performing Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Romance” Op. 37 with the Campus Orchestra. He also performed in several masterclasses for flutists such as Lorna McGhee and Brandon Patrick George.
Mitchell’s composition, “In Search of Aquatic Life” for unaccompanied flute, was published by Theodore Presser in 2024, and is currently on the contest list for the 2026 National Flute Association convention. His “Fanfare” for flute choir recently received its premiere with the Ohio State University Flute Troupe at the 2025 Ohio Music Education Association convention.
Administratively, Mitchell has served in several music organizations, including the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) Ohio State collegiate chapter, The Ohio State School of Music Ambassadors, and the Central Ohio Flute Association (COFA) for which he continues to serve as treasurer. Outside of music, Jonathan Mitchell loves to bake, travel, watch movies, and spend time with loved ones.
