Ziheng Huang is a Chinese saxophonist pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at The Ohio State University under Michael Rene Torres. He also serves as a dedicated graduate teaching associate in instrumental performance. Huang has extensive experience in stage performances and competitions. In 2025, he was a top-three finalist in BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Classical Musician competition, and performed with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in a live broadcast. That same year, he represented his school in a saxophone duo at the 20th World Saxophone Congress in Harbin.

A devoted chamber musician, Ziheng founded the Serica Trio and the Blue Marlin Saxophone Quartet, ensembles recognized with awards including Highly Commended in the RCS Governor’s Recital Prize Competition and Second Prize at China’s Youth Hummingbird Music Award.

Before coming to Columbus, Huang graduated with honors from Nanjing University of the Arts in China and earned an MMus at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where he studied with acclaimed saxophonist Josef Pacewicz and Professor Andrew Somerville.

He has participated in masterclasses with renowned international saxophonists, including Simon Diricq, Claude Delangle, Nobuya Sugawa and Arno Bornkamp, experiences that enriched his artistic vision and inspired him to explore new expressive possibilities on the saxophone.

Beyond music, Ziheng Huang is passionate about poetry, which has deeply shaped his artistic perspective. He writes classical Chinese, modern Chinese, and English poetry, earning awards such as the 2021 Excellence Award in the Traditional Chinese Poetry Composition Competition at Nanjing University of the Arts; and publishing his poem “End of the Moon” in Youth Literature Monthly magazine. His engagement with poetry heightens his sensitivity to emotion and nuance, helping him capture composers’ expressive intentions vividly in performance.
