The William Poland Lecture Series

The Poland Lecture series provides an opportunity for members of the School of Music and the university-at-large to hear distinguished scholars in music theory and related fields. Past lecturers have included Elizabeth West Marvin, Michael Klein, Ramon Satyendra, Robert Zatorre, Stephen MacAdams and Guerino Mazzola.

B. William Poland served as professor of music theory at Ohio State from 1949 until his death in 1987. His work lay at the intersection of music theory, music psychology, computer applications, statistics and pedagogy, and this interdisciplinarity laid the foundation of our program. The Poland lecture series is made possible by a generous endowment by the Poland family, which permits eminent scholars to lecture on “a topic of critical importance to scholarship in the theory of music.”
