Ben Newman is a performer, educator, and researcher based in Columbus, Ohio. He holds bachelor's degrees in Instrumental Music Education and Oboe Performance with minors in bassoon and saxophone. He is currently pursuing his master's degree in oboe performance at The Ohio State University. He performs regularly in the university's Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, and various chamber ensembles. As the oboe graduate teaching associate, Newman teaches lessons to music minors and non-majors, teaches reed-making classes to undergraduate majors, is the instructor of Oboe Techniques, and assists with administrative duties for the double reed studios. Additionally, he serves as secretary for the Graduate Music Student Association. Outside of his roles as a graduate student, Newman is a substitute oboist for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, and teaches with both the Music Academy of Worthington and the Ohio State Community Music School, sells his hand-made oboe reeds, and performs with various churches and ensembles in the community. Newman has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician in multiple honors recitals and as a finalist in multiple concerto competitions through Ohio State, Liberty University, the Virginia Music Education Association, and the MasterWorks Orchestra Festival. His primary teachers are Professors Abby Yeakle Held, Rebecca Watson,  Adam Shapiro, Courtney Miller, and Bill Parrish. 

Education and research have long been central to Ben Newman's work. As an undergraduate student, he started the Woodwind Studios at the Allegro Music School of Central Virginia, where he was the first to offer lessons in flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon and saxophone. He also co-authored the curricula for the school's first Elementary and Advanced Music Theory Camps. Between his positions in Virginia and Ohio, Newman has taught preschool through adult students. He was recognized as a 2025 Virginia Teacher of Promise, an award given to fewer than 100 students annually from all undergraduate and graduate teacher training programs in the state. Newman's research focuses on historical members of the oboe family. He published a thesis in 2024 on J. S. Bach's use of the oboe family in his vocal works, and he gave a lecture at the 2026 International Double Reed Society Conference on historically informed performance practice of Bach's oboe obbligati in his sacred cantata arias. He is now learning the Baroque oboe, and attended the 2026 International Baroque Academy in Schlitz, Germany.

Outside of music, Ben Newman enjoys making espresso and learning new languages. He is currently at an A2 level in German and is beginning to learn Spanish. His favorite season is autumn because of crunchy leaves, cool air, and Halloween.
