Course Description
In this course students will examine selections by composers of the eighteenth-century including Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven along with other important composers representing a variety of musical genres, styles, and lived experiences. Students will engage in how these composers interacted with and represented the shifting landscapes of culture and politics during the eighteenth century, particularly as it is impacted by place. Students will investigate music and people from across Europe and into the Americas, placing emphasis on how and why historical narratives surrounding eighteenth century music developed.
Teaching Method
This course includes lecture, discussions, in-class activities, writing, presentations, and in-class viewing/listening.
