Master of Arts in String Pedagogy
Suggested Plan of Study
Prerequisite for entrance is a baccalaureate degree in music with violin, viola, cello, or bass as the major or principal instrument. Deficiencies may be removed by additional preparatory course work assigned by the advisor.
Each student selects a program of study in consultation with an advisor. It must include a reasonable concentration and breadth of study designed to foster research, scholarship, and knowledge of a specialty in relation to allied academic areas, must be approved by the advisor, and is subject to the rules of the Graduate Studies Committee. At least 50% of the courses must be designated for graduate study only (6000-8000 level courses).
There are two paths to completion of the MA in String Pedagogy:
- Plan A – Thesis: Students pursuing Plan A will present a written document as the thesis.
- Plan B – Non-Thesis: Students pursuing Plan B will present a solo recital consisting of approximately thirty minutes of music and two papers/projects relevant to the student's program.

Research — Select one for 3 total credit hours
- Music 6998 — Master’s Research Non-Thesis
- Music 6999 — Research for Master's Thesis
Supportive Studies — 16 total credit hours
Ensembles
- Music 7215.01 – Symphony Orchestra (4 credit hours)
All students pursuing the MA in String Pedagogy degree must register for Symphony Orchestra each semester in which they take eight or more hours.
Research
- Music 6786 – Music Research Methods and Bibliography (3 credit hours)
Course Electives (choose at least two):
- Music 5591 – Career Development in Music (3 credit hours) or ArtEduc 5683: Developing Arts Careers: Positioning Passion (3 credit hours)
- Music 6752 – Arts in Urban Contexts Music (3 credit hours)
- Music 8810.31 – String Pedagogy for Applied Teaching (3 credit hours)
- Music 8820 – Music Theory Pedagogy (3 credit hours)
- Music 8895 – Practices, Pedagogies, and Philosophies of Teaching (3 credit hours)
And additional courses of the student’s choice, approved by advisor.
