THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MUSIC DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
Recipient: Professor Lois Rosow

Lois Rosow, Professor Emerita of Music, served on the School of Music faculty from 1985 to 2014. She headed the Musicology Area for eighteen years, seeing it through the addition of a graduate program in ethnomusicology, the transition from quarters to semesters, and the introduction of a post-baccalaureate doctoral degree. She has served as president of the Society for Seventeenth-Century Music and on the Board of Directors of the American Musicological Society, and is now Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Seventeenth-Century Music. Over the years she served on or chaired many university and professional committees and boards, and she is currently president of the Board of Trustees for the Early Music in Columbus concert series. Dr. Rosow holds a BA from Oberlin College and a PhD from Brandeis University. Her research is focused mainly on French opera of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with particular interest in text-music relations, allegorical meaning, music printing and engraving, performance-practice issues, and the administrative history and scribal workshop of the Paris Opera. Her critical edition of Armide by Jean-Baptiste Lully (Olms, 2003), completed with a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, has served for several productions over the years, two of them released on audio CD (Naxos, 2008; Aparte, 2017) and one on DVD (FRA musica, 2011). She has published articles in numerous journals, encyclopedias and anthologies, and served as guest editor of a special issue of the Journal of Seventeenth-Century Music devoted to Lully’s opera Persée.

THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MUSIC DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS AWARD
Recipient: John Fedchock

John Fedchock’s illustrious career in jazz has spanned over four decades. Since his emergence on the scene in 1980, Fedchock has established himself as a world-class trombone soloist, a heralded bandleader, and a GRAMMY-nominated arranger. An in-demand performer and writer in New York City, his multifaceted talents have led him to become one of NYC’s premier jazz artists. His critically acclaimed John Fedchock New York Big Band has become a marquee group showcasing Fedchock’s trombone and arranging as well as the band’s all-star soloists. The band’s recordings have appeared in jazz radio’s Top Ten and in recognition of his writing skills, Fedchock is a two-time GRAMMY nominee for Instrumental Arranging. Small group projects with his Quartet and Sextet put his distinct solo voice more directly in the spotlight. Fedchock began his career touring with the legendary Woody Herman for seven years and served as chief arranger for Herman's last two GRAMMY-nominated albums. He has also toured with T. S. Monk, Gerry Mulligan, Louie Bellson, Jon Faddis, and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. Born in Cleveland Ohio, Fedchock is a 1979 graduate of The Ohio State University (BM and BME) and holds a master’s degree from the Eastman School of Music. He is an in-demand clinician and conducts seminars and workshops worldwide. As a solo artist, he appears throughout the United States and abroad performing as guest trombonist/composer/conductor. How firm thy friendship ... O-HI-O!
