Music by Henry Purcell - Libretto by Nahum Tate
A collaboration between the School of Music and Department of Dance
A. Scott Parry, director
Susan Van Pelt Petry, choreographer
Kristina Caswell MacMullen, conductor
As one of the first and perhaps greatest of English operas, Dido & Aeneas offers a stunning combination of music drama inseparably entwined with vibrant dance and exquisite choral writing. Virgil's fateful story of the abandoned Queen of Carthage, versified by the poet Tate, culminates here in Purcell's masterful When I Am Laid in Earth, one of the most moving and beloved arias in all of opera.
