Celebrating Creative Practice, Culture, and a New Era of Hip Hop at Ohio State
Dig, Sample, Chop, Sequence: Hip Hop Studies in Practice is an evening of DJing, beat making, sampling, and creative practice celebrating the emerging Hip Hop Studies program at The Ohio State University and the release of J Rawls’ new instrumental album, Dig, Sample, Chop, Sequence. Built around these distinct four stages of Hip Hop production — digging, sampling, chopping, and sequencing — the event brings students and faculty together to demonstrate how Hip Hop is studied, created, and experienced. Students from DJing and Beat Making & Sampling courses will perform alongside Rawls.
This includes a live showcase in which multiple student producers reinterpret the same source material used to create Rawls’ single “Introspective Perspective,” revealing how one sound can inspire many creative possibilities. Part album release, part student showcase, and part Hip Hop Studies open house, the evening invites the Ohio State community to experience Hip Hop as culture, creative practice, scholarship, and a living form of knowledge.
