In celebration of Russel C. Mikkelson’s career as a faculty member at The Ohio State University School of Music, distinguished American composer James M. Stephenson has been commissioned to create a new composition. The 25–30 minute work for winds and percussion will be his Symphony No. 6 and be conducted by Mikkelson at his final on-campus concert, Friday, April 23, 2027 in Weigel Auditorium. 

Individuals, ensembles and institutions are invited to be part of the project. There are two ways to participate:

University, military, community and high school bands 

• Consortium performer membership is $1,000, payable in one single payment or two equal installments of $500. 
• Membership includes a digital set of parts and full score for a single performance after its premiere on April 23, 2027. 
• Members will be listed in the front matter of the conductor score and enjoy a period of exclusivity for performance following the premiere through May 1, 2028. 

Individual supporters

• Individuals are invited to support the project by a providing minimum financial donation of $100. 
• Names of individual supporters will be listed in the front matter of the conductor score.
