Mike Smith, director/conductor
Our 49th Jazz Festival concludes with a start-studded concert.
The Ohio State Jazz Ensemble performs Miles Ahead – Miles Davis and Gil Evans’ masterpiece, with guest soloists Anthony Stanco (assistant professor of jazz trumpet, Michigan State University) and alumnus Miles Franklin Smith (BM 2023, Jazz Studies; MM 2025, Jazz, Northern Illinois University), flugelhorn.
All Miles Ahead charts arranged by Gil Evans. These charts edited by Jeffrey Sultanof, with Dylan Canterbury and Rob Dubof.
Miles Ahead was released in 1957 on Columbia Records. It was the second collaboration between Miles Davis and Gil Evans. Others include The Miles Davis Nonet recordings that became known as The Birth of the Cool, Porgy and Bess, and Sketches of Spain. The Jazz Ensemble is performing the first seven of the ten tracks on Miles Ahead, and we will play them without a break between tracks, just as it is presented on the album.
