"Echoes in the Dark"

Diana Chubak, piano

Echoes in the Dark brings together four composers whose music inhabits the space between presence and absence — between what is heard and what is remembered, imagined, or sensed. Across the program, the piano becomes more than an instrument: it becomes a space for memory, ritual, resonance, and transformation.

The recital begins with Pēteris Vasks’ Cycle, whose use of extended techniques pushes the sound of the piano beyond the conventional keyboard. From there, Valentin Silvestrov’s Bagatelles turn toward memory, allowing fragments and echoes of the past to surface and disappear. Einojuhani Rautavaara’s Icons shifts the perspective toward the sacred, drawing inspiration from the stillness and mystery of Orthodox iconography.

The journey culminates in Maurice Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit, where the piano becomes a world of shadows, visions, and mystery. From the luminous seduction of Ondine to the suspended darkness of Le Gibet (The Gibbet) and the terrifying volatility of Scarbo, Ravel makes the invisible audible.

This event is free and open to the public. No ticket required.

Livestream broadcast begins at 7:30 p.m.
