Infant Chinese Music Class — 婴儿亲子中文音乐课 (华语家庭 / Chinese-American Families)
Sundays, June 28 – July 26, 2026
The Community Music School (CMS) Infant Chinese Music Class is a music program designed for Chinese and Chinese-American families with children aged 0 to 36 months to experience joyful music-making through culturally relevant songs, rhymes and music games. The class supports cultural connection and helps families share cultural traditions with their children, while using music-based interaction to support children's Mandarin development and cultural identity. Activities also highlight rhythm, emphasis, and intonation - the "music" in our voices - supporting early listening, communication, and language development in a relationship-centered way. Families will take part in both instructor-led and free-play activities and will receive easy take-home ideas for music-making at home. No prior music experience is needed.
Academic and Research Component: The program is connected to a pilot research project, "Cross-domain Prosodic Alighment: Aligning Musical Accent Structure with Mandarin Intonation to Support Prosodic Processing in Chinese-American Infants", developed by Jieying "Ying" Zhang (PhD student in Music Education) and Qingke Sun (graduate student in Chinese Linguistics), under the supervision of Eugenia Costa-Giomi (Professor of Music Education) at The Ohio State University. This study examines whether alignment between musical accent structure and Mandarin intonation supports infants' processing of prosodic cues and emotional communication in a culturally grounded learning context.
