At Ohio State, the programs of study in music theory are truly multi-faceted. For decades our goal has been to offer students a wide range of options in diverse areas of concentration supported by a full-time faculty whose interests are both varied and comprehensive. This strategy has successfully prepared our students for present-day careers that require not only specialized expertise but also the broad background needed to capitalize on opportunities. We are committed to advocacy for our students and their careers.
In the area of music technology, students are encouraged to take advantage of multi-disciplinary collaborations within the university and the College of Arts and Sciences‚ for example, through the internationally acclaimed Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design.
Distinguished theorists represent specialties that include Music Cognition, analytical methodology, pedagogy and history of theory. The theory program is enriched by guest speakers and the William Poland Lecture series. Ohio State has established a Music Cognition Laboratory that is without peer.
