Coaching Chamber Music

Three sessions designed to develop skills to effectively select, coach and prepare for performance, chamber music ensembles. Fun, creative, productive techniques and principles for delivering information appropriately to students of all ages will be offered. Sample teaching strategies will include improvisation for communication, problem-solving techniques for developing ensemble skills, and coaching techniques for approaching repertoire for study and for performance. Bring your instrument and your enthusiasm for making music!

Four conducting sessions offered as a part of the workshop with exercises to overcome common problems in conducting public school orchestras. Skills addressed will include preparatory gestures, staccato and legato styles, formats, cueing, cutoffs, use of the left hand; and changes in tempos, meters and styles. Please bring a baton if you use one on a regular basis as part of your conducting. The conducting sessions will be limited to six Graduate Credit or CEU participants who elect to participate on a first-come, first-served basis. Those choosing to do so should bring two scores (at least one must be an original part) and a set C of parts of one or two pieces they would like to use for working on their own conducting. Conducting participants will receive two video recordings of their lab demonstrations. Bring a 2-BG flash drive to receive your video OR have an accessible Dropbox or Google Drive account to which we can send your video. On Sunday night, please inform the staff how you would like to transfer your videos.

Technology lab participants are asked to attend three of the four sessions offered below. In addition to the four offered sessions, the clinicians will be offering a “Tech Drop-In Session” during a workshop dinner break if you are interested in working one-on-one with them.
- Session 1: Exceptional Apps, Part 1. This session will focus on apps for both iOS and Google devices that can assist in your daily rehearsals including performance tools, note/rhythm reading apps and games. Time will be allotted for answering your questions about apps and portable devices.
- Session 2: Exceptional Apps, Part 2. Part 2 will cover all the non-music-specific portable-device apps that can help save you time and keep you and your classes organized. It will also feature a "show and tell" of peripheral devices that can be used with an iPad/iPhone to enhance basic recording, projection and sound. Time will be allotted for answering your questions about apps and portable devices.
- Session 3: Web Resources, Administrative Tools, Blended Learning, and What's New. This class will introduce you to many online resources to organize and administer your classroom, and explore some sample "blended learning" lessons to integrate 21st century technology with our 17th century equipment. In addition, we will explore any new resources that have arrived on the scene in the last 12–24 months. Participants will be encouraged to share the tools that work best for them.
- Session 4: Sheet Music Creation: Free and Licensed Software. Looking for ways to get started on computer-generated sheet music creation? This class will introduce some free online resources (MuseScore/Noteflight) for teachers and students to create music, hear it played back and share with others. Also, a brief introduction to Finale will be given, along with work time to try out music creation software or explore already-generated music.
