2018 Ohio State Middle School Honor Band Festival

Outstanding musicians in grades 7 – 8 are nominated by their directors. Students rehearse and perform in one of four concert bands, led by a dedicated conductor and the festival guest composer/conductor William Owens.

Nominations can only be submitted by the band director. Band directors may nominate up to four students currently enrolled in grades 7 or 8 (i.e. a maximum of 8 nominees per school). All nominations must be submitted through an online nomination form.

Highlights for the 2018 Festival
- Both 8th grade honor bands will present the world premiere of a brand new composition by William Owens at the Festival Concert.
- The festival will include more than 360 students in four equal-ability honor bands.
- The Festival Concert will take place in the magnificent 2,400-seat Mershon Auditorium.
Established in 2012, the Ohio State Middle School Honor Band Festival annually provides the opportunity for outstanding musicians in seventh and eighth grades to be nominated by their band directors for involvement in the one-day event. Students who are selected take part in one of four 90-piece concert bands—two 7th Grade Honor Bands and two 8th Grade Honor Bands. Each honor band rehearses and performs with the festival guest composer as well as their dedicated conductor. Lunch, a festival T-shirt, and a recording of the final performance are included as part of the tuition.
Parents and directors of students selected for participation will be notified electronically by Tuesday, January 16, 2018. At least one musician from each nominating school will be selected for involvement in the festival. Due to the large number of nominations, not all students who are nominated for the festival will be invited to participate. Decisions for involvement will be made based upon director recommendation balanced with the instrumentation needs of each honor band. Selected students receive their music prior to the festival, and are expected to arrive with their individual parts thoroughly prepared.
7:30 a.m.—Student arrival at rehearsal locations on campus
11:30 a.m.—Lunch (included with tuition)
4 p.m.—Free public performance by Festival Honor Bands in Mershon Auditorium.
A detailed schedule will be emailed to the parents/guardians of all participating musicians two weeks prior to the festival.
Tuition for selected Honor Band musicians is $65 which includes all instruction, materials, lunch, T-shirt and a recording of the performance. Each participating student will need to bring his/her instrument and accessories. Dress for the 4 p.m. performance will be the festival T-shirts.
Required Forms for Accepted Students
Parents/guardians of all students selected for participation in this year's festival must download, print, complete and sign the following forms and return them to the student's band director no later than Friday, January 19, 2018.
