Global and Popular Music Experience is a NEW addition to the music and outreach programs at Ohio State.
Held at The Ohio State University School of Music, this program offers an opportunity for high school students to experience music-making and learning within global and popular traditions. Under the guidance of expert teachers and Ohio State student leaders, participants will play in a steel band, participate in either an Andean music ensemble* or African drum ensemble, and explore hip-hop or rock/pop/eclectic styles in an encouraging, fun and interactive environment. In addition to performing and creating, students will learn about the rich cultural contexts related to the music they play. Students will also participate in performances that are free and open to the public.
* Never heard of an Andean Music Ensemble? Ohio State has one and it is a lot of fun! Check out their sound.
This program is designed for students with various levels of musical experience and background — prior music study is not required, but certainly welcome. We gladly accept both beginners and skilled musicians.
A limited pool of scholarship funding is available to support participation for those who would otherwise find it financially prohibitive. Please read all instructions before submitting your registration. If you plan to apply for a scholarship, have the required materials prepared so that you can submit them within 48 hours of your registration.

ELIGIBILITY — For students entering grades 9–12 in the 2021–2022 school year.
FEE — $295 total, or $25 deposit, if applying for scholarship assistance.
To qualify for financial assistance, submit a $25 deposit at the time of registration and complete the Scholarship Application steps within 48 hours of registering.
Depending on the number of applications that qualify, fees for scholarship winners may be as low as $99!

Waitlist — This program has an enrollment limit of 30 students. Registration with payment of the full $295 fee or $25 scholarship deposit is required to secure a spot. Should enrollment reach the limit, registration will close, and a waitlist will be started. Those who wish to be placed on the waitlist should email Christopher Dent (email@example.com) with the student's name and email, parent's name and email, and a phone number. If spots open prior to the first session in August, we will contact those on the waitlist, in the order they were received, to fill the spot.
Sample Daily Schedule
A typical Saturday schedule:
- 8:30–9 a.m. — Check-in
- 9–9:50 a.m. — Steel Band (All students)
- 10–10:50 a.m. — Global Ensembles (Andean Music or African Drum)
- 11–11:50 a.m. — Popular Groups (Hip-Hop or Rock/Pop/Eclectic)
A detailed schedule for the first session on August 28 will be provided approximately three weeks prior to the start of the program. Subsequent schedules will be emailed approximately one week prior to the session.
