Weigel Hall

Performances at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The School of Music, in collaboration with the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD), is pleased to include 40 Ohio State faculty/staff participants across all disciplines in a very exciting multimedia event.

On Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018 the Choral Department will present two performances of Carl Orff’s masterpiece, Carmina Burana. While this iconic work enjoys perennial performance, it is rarely realized with the visual dimension that Orff originally indicated. For this production, Alex Oliszewski, assistant professor of Theatrical Media Design and Media Devising, will partner with Anna Gawboy, associate professor of Music Theory, to lead the creation of a digital-visual design.

Music and the arts have the capacity to unite.

In the spirit of community and connection, faculty from all disciplines join us in performance. You need not have extensive experience to participate. No audition required. Participation will be on a first-come, first-served basis. We are offering two performances on February 25 — 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. In the event that we have an overwhelming response, participants will perform in one of the two concerts.

This will truly be a collaborative and innovative effort, celebrating the entire campus community.

Richard BjellaMaestro Richard Bjella will serve as the guest conductor of The Ohio State University choral department's 2018 production of Carmina Burana. Bjella's mastery of craft has long established him as a leader both nationally and internationally. His pioneering artistry has shaped the landscape of American choral music. His work is brave, bold and daring. He reimagines lines, and brings a fresh musical perspective to each unique production. Beyond his artistic contribution in performance, his pedagogic knowledge is vast. He moves between elementary-aged students and professional musicians with equal fluency. He will meet all participants, regardless of mastery and experience, with honor and respect, drawing forth each participant's potential.

Participants must:

  • Attend at least one curricular rehearsal (55 minutes) per week, beginning with the first week of classes (Jan. 8), for a total of nine (9) weeks.
We recommend that participants attend the University Chorus, a beginning SATB ensemble that meets MW from 5:20 – 6:15 p.m. (Carmina rehearsal only). This ensemble is best suited for participants with less experience. For those unable to make this time slot or who have advanced musical training, there are two additional ensemble options:
  • Symphonic Choir—advanced SATB ensemble; Carmina rehearsals MW 1:50 – 2:45 p.m.
  • Men's Glee Club—tenor/bass ensemble; Carmina rehearsals MW 4:10 – 5:05 p.m.
  • Be available for two extended rehearsals to be held the week of the performance (schedule provided to participants via email).
  • Register online for the event by 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14 (registration is now CLOSED).
  • Pay the participation fee of $20 by Friday, December 15. This fee includes a score, rehearsal tracks and a stand lamp necessary for performance.

Deadline extended to 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017.
