Audition Information

Autumn Semester 2017

Wednesday, August 23 and Friday, August 25

Hughes Hall, 1899 College Rd.

  • All students participating in jazz ensembles or applied lessons—music majors and non-majors—must participate in the audition process.

  • All students must sign up for audition time digitally. There will be no paper sign-up sheets.


Instrumentalists

All brass, saxophone and rhythm players are expected to (1) prepare excerpts for their instrument/s, (2) sight-read jazz charts and (3) play short improvisations at audition.

  1. Complete the digital Jazz Audition Form 2017 prior to the scheduled date for your instrument.
  2. Download the excerpt(s) for your instrument(s) from the list below. Each is one page, except bass trombone, bass and drums (2 pages). Most excerpts begin at mid-page; disregard blank space appearing near the top.
  3. Schedule your audition time (at the sign-up link above).

SAXOPHONE/WOODWIND (Shawn Wallace)—Wednesday, Aug. 23 from 3–7 p.m. (HU 407)

RHYTHM SECTION

  • Drums (Jim Rupp and Michael Smith)—Friday, Aug. 25 from 9 a.m.–1 p.m. (HU 014). You will be asked to play grooves in a variety of styles, as well as sight read some rhythms and a chart.

Vocalists

Opportunities for vocalists are available through the PDF icon Ohio Show Band.

Vocalists are expected to (1) demonstrate vocal range, (2) sing an unaccompanied song of their choice and (3) demonstrate ability to harmonize at audition.

Jazz/Contemporary Voice auditions (Shawn Wallace)—Friday, Aug. 25 from 12:30–3:30 p.m. (HU 407)

  1. Complete the digital Jazz Audition Form 2017 prior to your audition date.
  2. Schedule your audition time (at the sign-up link above).

After the Auditions

Band personnel lists will be posted on the bulletin board across from the Weigel first floor elevator.

  1. All students participating in jazz ensembles or lessons must attend a Jazz Studies department meeting to be held Sunday evening following auditions: August 27, 2017 from 6–8 p.m. in Hughes Auditorium.

  2. Rehearsals for all ensembles begin Monday, August 28.  Rehearsal schedule
