The Symphony Orchestra's February 6 program includes Mozart's Magic Flute Overture; Samuel Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915 (in celebration of 100-year anniversary), featuring Katherine Petersen, soprano; Marshall Haddock, conductor. The ensemble also performs Howard Hanson's Symphony No. 2 (“Romantic”); Antoine T. Clark, conductor. Katherine Petersen is a DMA student concerto winner and a student of Scott McCoy. Antoine Clark (DMA, clarinet performance) is pursuing the MM in conducting.
Soprano Katherine Petersen has been described as “refreshing, full of simplicity and innocence.” Most recently, she was seen performing various arias in the production Rhythm on the River, a collaborative effort between Opera Columbus and Ballet Met Columbus. In spring 2014, Katherine sang the role of Valencienne in Opera Columbus’ "Opera on the Edge" production of The Merry Widow. With the Russian Opera Workshop in Philadelphia, she performed the title roles in Rachmaninoff’s Francesca di Rimini and Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet. During the 2012-13 season, Katherine performed the role of Mimi in Opera Columbus’ "Opera on the Edge" production of La bohème. Her future engagements include covering Countess Rosina in the Opera Columbus mainstage production of Le Nozze di Figaro. Her other roles include Pamina, Die Zauberflöte; Micaëla, Carmen; The Mother/Sandman, Hänsel und Gretel; Una Conversa, Suor Angelica.
Antoine Clark is a first-year master's student in the Orchestral Conducting program. He studied music education and music performance at The Ohio State University, the Cincinnati-Conservatory of Music, and at Virginia Commonwealth University. As an orchestral clarinetist, he has performed as principal clarinetist of the Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra, the Dearborn Symphony (Dearborn, MI) and the Ash Lawn Opera Festival (Charlottesville, VA). He currently performs with local orchestras and is an associate musician with the Columbus Symphony. He was the music director of the Wayne State College Orchestra (Wayne, NE) while serving as an interim assistant professor of woodwinds. In 2013 he founded the McConnell Arts Center Chamber Orchestra in Worthington, Ohio and serves as the organization's Music and Artistic Director.
