(Auditions not required)

The Ohio State University School of Music offers two orchestras for non-music majors who are interested in furthering their musical development, as well as making new friends and experiencing the artistry of performing in a collegiate ensemble. Auditions for membership are not required; information about optional auditions for principal seating will be provided at the first rehearsal of the semester.

String musicianFirst-Year Undergraduate String Orchestra

The First-Year Undergraduate String Orchestra (FYUSO) is a string chamber ensemble open to first-year non-music majors who have played violin, viola, cello or bass in high school and are currently enrolled at The Ohio State University.

Music majors also are welcome to enroll by playing their secondary instrument in the ensemble after successfully completing a related string methods course.

Each term all members of this ensemble must enroll in Music 2215.02 to be eligible to play. Students receive a letter grade for the course based upon participation in rehearsals and performances.

The First-Year Undergraduate String Orchestra performs once per term in conjunction with the Ohio State University Community Orchestra. There are no required auditions for membership. However, there is an optional audition for those interested in serving as principal players. Information about this optional seating audition is available at the first rehearsal of each academic term.

Repertoire performed by this ensemble includes a wide range of musical styles. Students are encouraged to play their own instrument; however, instruments can be provided on loan from The Ohio State University School of Music. Locker and instrument information will be distributed at the first rehearsal.
