To participate in The Ohio State University Symphony Orchestra, all string players are required to take a short audition for the full string faculty and the director of the Ohio State Symphony. These auditions will be used in faculty decisions on section placement and chamber music assignments. We will hear you play a brief solo (no more than two minutes — about one page of music) and a set of assigned excerpts as specified below.
These auditions are open to all interested string players: majors and non-majors, undergraduate and graduate. If you are new to the program and want to find out more about eligibility, please contact Prof. Mark Rudoff (email@example.com).
ATTENTION! For eligible non-major string players only: If you have schedule conflicts with the rehearsals on Fridays, you are still strongly encouraged to audition for the Symphony Orchestra. Once you are accepted, please contact Prof. Rudoff to discuss an alternative arrangement for the conflict.
Auditions take place during the first week of autumn semester.
- Violins and Violas: Thursday, Aug. 22 in Hughes Hall 305 — 1:50–5:00 p.m.
- Cellos and Basses: Friday, Aug. 23 in Hughes Hall 305 — 1:30–5:00 p.m.
Audition instructions and links to musical excerpts for all string sections are included in the PDF below (NOTE: musical excerpts change every semester).
Sign up for an audition slot on the sheets posted on the Ohio State string area bulletin board, 3rd floor of Hughes Hall.
