Jazz Opportunities for High School Students

An Invitation

Jazz Studies faculty invite high school jazz band directors and students to participate in three events sponsored by The Ohio State School of Music Jazz Studies area.

Jazz Workshops

A Saturday devoted to the various instruments in the jazz band provides students with the unique opportunity to interact with fellow high school jazz players and engage with outstanding teachers and performers from the jazz faculty at The Ohio State University. Sessions 9:30 a.m.–2 p.m.

  • Woodwinds — saxophones (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone), flute, clarinet
  • Brass — trumpet, trombone, bass trombone
  • Rhythm section — piano, bass, drums, guitar

Designed for jazz students at all levels - jazz band directors are welcome too!  Workshops will cover topics including improvisation, playing in a section, tuning and intonation, mouthpiece and other instrument needs, practice routines, and much more! At the end of the day, participants will enjoy special performance by Ohio State jazz ensembles. Come and join us for a fun-filled day of playing jazz!

High School Jazz Band Day

High School Jazz Band Day occurs as part of the annual Ohio State Jazz Festival. We welcome all jazz bands, from the less-mature to the advanced, to perform and receive constructive comments from our adjudicators, as well as receive a private clinic after your performance.

Band directors and their students are invited to attend all of the festival performances at High School Jazz Band Day.

Jazz Camp

Intermediate to advanced high school jazz students get an in-depth, immersive and exciting experience at The Ohio State University School of Music Jazz Camp. Students work side by side with the university’s talented jazz faculty and students to enhance and improve skills such as sight-reading, improvisation and technique. Each day is filled with exciting class work, intimate master classes, energetic combo sessions, big band rehearsals, and unique concert-going experiences. The non-competitive, educational environment at Jazz Camp allows for collaboration between students and individual growth. Students may opt to enjoy the full college experience by residing on campus during the week or may commute from home.
