Elias Goldstein, viola, prize winner at the 2008 Primrose International Viola Competition, will perform music of Mozart, Paganini and Handel-Halvorsen with his wife, Roxana Pavel Goldstein, violin. This event is free and open to the public.Program selections are Mozart's Duo in G major for Violin and Viola, K 423;  Paganini's Caprices for Solo Viola, E. Goldstein transcription; Handel-Halvorsen's Passacaglia for Violin and Viola. Dr. Elias Goldstein made his solo recital Carnegie Hall debut in 2014 to critical acclaim, and won second prize at the Primrose International Viola Competition in 2011. He made his Russian debut with the Moscow Soloists, and the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra under Alexander Slatkovsky. He took second prize at the Bashmet International Viola Competition, and was also a top prize-winner of the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition in 2010. He has also won top and special prizes at the Andrews University International String Competition, and the Watson Forbes International Viola Competition in 2009. He was a featured performer at the 2012 and 2013 International Viola Congresses, and the 2014 Primrose International Festival.  |  Goldstein is a founding member of the Logos String Quartet, now in residence at Louisiana State University. He holds degrees from DePaul University (MM) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (DMA) where he was a Collins Fellow. He has studied with Mark Zinger and with Sally Chisholm. As a soloist with orchestras, he has appeared with the Moscow Soloists under the direction of Yuri Bashmet, Moscow Philharmonic, New Mexico Chamber Orchestra, Advent Chamber Orchestra, the Ukrainian Chamber Orchestra, and the DePaul Symphony Orchestra, where he won the annual concerto competition twice. As an orchestral musician, he has performed as guest concertmaster with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. He was a regular member of the Grant Park Orchestra, and has also performed with the Bergen Philharmonic in Norway and with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He is a founding member and principal violist of the Advent Chamber Orchestra. Currently he is principal of the Baton Rouge Symphony. Dr. Roxana Pavel Goldstein recently made her Carnegie Hall recital debut in 2014 to critical acclaim. She is a founding member of the Logos String quartet (ensemble in residence at Louisiana State University), where she also directs the chamber music program and Collegium Musicum. She has won numerous prizes at major competitions including First and Second Prize at the Cita di Stessa International Competition in Italy, as well as First Prize in the Rembrandt Chamber Music Competition. She took First Prize at the coveted Lyre of Gold Competition in Bacau Romania. She also won the DePaul University Annual Concerto Competition.  |  Pavel-Goldstein received her bachelor’s and master's degrees from DePaul University where she studied with Mark Zinger, and finished her DMA at the University of Wisconsin with David Perry, where she is was a Paul Collins Fellow. She has appeared recently as soloist with the Ukrainian Chamber Orchestra, Ball State Symphony, and has performed extensively as a recitalist in Europe, Australia, Korea and the United States. She was recently featured as guest concertmaster of the New Zealand Philharmonic in 2015, and was the concertmaster and music director of Advent Chamber Orchestra since its inception, and has appeared on WFMT and WPR on several occasions. She has been a guest artist with the Chicago Chamber Musicians, Rembrandt Chamber Players, and is a regular member of the International Chamber Artists in Chicago.
