The woodwind faculty are all full-time professors in the OSU School of Music, and are current and past members of major orchestras, including Columbus Symphony Orchestra, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, New Sousa Band and the Roanoke Symphony. They are leaders in instrument societies such as the National Flute Association and the Percussive Arts Society International Conference.
Undergraduate and graduate woodwind majors perform in the School of Music's large ensembles: Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, University Band and Jazz Lab Band. Chamber music ensembles are formed with regular coaching and students may register for credit. In addition, studio ensembles of varying combinations perform on a regular basis. These include: Jazz Combos, Flute Troupe, Double Reed Ensemble, Clarinet Choir/Ensemble, Bassoon Ensemble and Saxophone Ensemble.
Along with the required curricular studies there are a number of elective courses available to woodwind majors. These include the health-focused Alexander Technique class and a very practical Instrument Repair course. Students are encouraged to enroll and actively participate in a course titled Performance Enhancement.
Our woodwind graduates become teachers at schools, colleges and universities, and include extensive performing and writing in their scholarly activities. Many are performing in military bands, chamber ensembles and orchestras. Several have won Fulbright Scholarships and have taken top prizes in performance competitions.
There is a full time faculty on each woodwind instrument. Students work with the professors in their applied studies.
