Percussion

The percussion studio at The Ohio State University offers comprehensive training to undergraduate and graduate students who are preparing for careers in music performance, music education and the music industry. The percussion studies program is designed to foster the development of a student’s musicianship, technical proficiency and versatility in all areas of percussion.

A major component of the percussion degree is membership in the OSU Percussion Ensemble, an active chamber group comprised of freshmen to doctoral percussion majors. This ensemble frequently collaborates with other artistic disciplines including dance, theater and art. Drums Downtown, a yearly event held in one of Columbus' premier performance venues, showcases the percussion area alongside the OSU Department of Dance. In 2005, the OSU Percussion Ensemble was selected to perform at both the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) and the Midwest Clinic.

The department hosts an annual OSU Percussion Ensemble Festival Weekend, highlighting the talents of internationally recognized guest artists. Recent clinician/performers at Ohio State include: Michael Burritt, Anders Astrand, Robin Engelman, John Beck, Bill Cahn, Neil Grover, Steve Houghton, Christopher Norton, Linda Maxey, John Tafoya, Anthony Cirone and James Campbell. Members of the percussion studio also have opportunities to work with the Greater Columbus Youth Percussion Ensemble as coaches, conductors and teaching assistants.

Percussion students also are offered opportunities to explore the traditions of rudimental drumming through participation in the OSU Fife & Drum Ensemble. In addition to individual instruction, group seminars are presented on a diverse number of topics including hand drumming, drum set, equipment repair, ragtime xylophone and professional development.

Complementing the studio is the professional ensemble the Pendulum Duo, comprised of percussion faculty members Susan Powell (Associate Professor of Percussion) and Joseph Krygier (Lecturer in Percussion).
